Wheal Coates consists of three engine houses this portfolio focused solely on one engine house the Towanroath Engine House. This was one of the last engine houses built on the site in the late 19th century and was partially rebuilt by the national trust in the 20th century. This engine house was mainly used to pump water out of the lower parts of the Towanroath Mine shaft which reaches below the sea level, worked to a depth of 165m. The Towanroath Mine shaft now lies beneath a metal grate next to the engine house and is 183m deep.
